Miriam Makeba was a South African singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist known as "Mama Africa." She gained international fame for her unique blend of jazz, soul, and traditional African music. Makeba was also an outspoken critic of the apartheid regime in South Africa and was forced into exile for many years. She continued to use her music as a platform for social justice until her death in 2008.
