Jackie Shane was a pioneering transgender soul singer who gained fame in the 1960s. Born in 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee as a boy named Jack, she moved to Canada as a teenager and began singing in clubs in the 1950s. She then formed the Jackie Shane Band and released singles like “Any Other Way” which became a hit and propelled her to fame. Shane retired from music in the early 1970s and lived a private life in Nashville until her death in 2019. She was known for her powerful voice, flamboyant stage presence, and her trailblazing role as a transgender performer at a time when such visibility was rare.
